Justin French (b. 1988) is a self-taught photographer and director working at the intersection of fashion, documentary, and classical portraiture. He received is MSc in International Economics and Trade from London Metropolitan University. His practice recontextualizes contemporary subjects through the lens of ancient and self-authored mythologies, creating a visual language that bridges the gap between historical tradition and modern identity.
At the core of French’s work is a systematic integration of mythological archetypes. By infusing his compositions with layers of allegory and symbolism, he moves beyond simple representation to create narratives that feel both timeless and urgent. He treats the photographic frame as a space for "philosophical polity," examining how collective myths shape our individual understanding of vulnerability and power.
Technically, French’s work is rooted in a deep reverence for classical aesthetics. He employs the lighting and structural principles of traditional portraiture to elevate his subjects, grounding his experiments in beauty and fashion with the weight of art history. This meticulous attention to detail allows him to navigate diverse genres—from editorial high-fashion to raw documentary—without losing his distinct, emotive signature.
The resulting body of work is a harmonious synergy of disparate worlds. By blending the polished artifice of fashion with the grounded truth of documentary, French invites a profound contemplation of the threads that unite the human experience across time and culture.
